Eclectic seating arrangements are the order of the day at this Irish pub on lower Richmond. The Harp feels more like a living room or a backyard lounge than a bar, which on some nights is the only cure for your ills. You can take your pick from stools at the bar, couches in the nooks and crannies, or tables both inside and out. Beware of errant darts on Wednesdays, when citywide competitions can get fierce. Blame the strong pours when you show up to work with a (new) dart wound.
As our sister blog Eating...Our Words does, from time to time Rocks Off will be giving your our picks for the top taverns in various Houston-area neighborhoods. Of course, the lines can be porous, but... More »
I have always known that the Wandering Tamale Hustlers of the Montrose make the best tamales. Maybe it is because they show up at the bar when you're two and half sheets to the wind. I was hanging out... More »
I've learned a few things this year. I've learned that acid reflux is a force to be reckoned with. I've learned that it might be time to retire some of my Caddyshack lines. I've learned that the subprime mortgage meltdown really has affected all... More »
Jon King has mastered the most important skill in bartending — attitude. He's not all smiles or cheery salutations; rather, he possesses that charming, old-man sass (even though he's barely 40) that's no doubt born of years of serving drunks. You want to earn King's respect, but first you'll have to prove you're not just another Saturday-night Sam or Sally. King is like a suspicious crush waiting to see if you'll return. During your first couple of trips, you'll likely be greeted with little more than a "What can I get ya?" But once he sees you around more, count on being rewarded with plenty of laughs via his clever quips and biting comebacks. King is exactly the kind of bartender you want heading up your neighborhood hangout — a solid dude who's handy with a tap, nozzle or shaker.
Great patio and fun couches/seating on the inside.
No cover charge and its a very comfortable place to drink.

A single, female friend of ours describes this place as "the yuppie Rudyard's," and we have to agree. Here, just as at any bar, you'll find tons of dudes drinking away and looking for love. But the crop at this Irish-tinged pub is a little creamier, if you know what we mean. Nothing attracts future yupsters like a clean bar with a wide variety of Euro beers on tap, and this place delivers. You can snag yourself a future doctor or lawyer before he gets all rich and full of himself -- not... More »
The Harp This Irish-tinged watering hole is a little different from the average Montrose hangout, but that's part of its appeal. Its dark walls, soft lighting and hardwood floors are charming. And there's something pleasantly laid-back about the atmosphere -- maybe it's the dart players tallying up their points or the comfy, wrap-around porch. Maybe it's the fact that denizens have been known to bring in a baby or two. Maybe it's just those cushiony barstools. Can we say heaven? More »
