While 18- and 21-plus age groups have plenty of places to choose from around town, younger teenagers are often left out in the cold, searching for all-ages gigs or a place to hang out. The Garage, the City of Burnsville’s youth recreation center, has after-school and summer programs for middle- and high-school youth. On the weekends, it turns into an all-ages music venue, offering gigs by local up-and-coming bands, usually for $5 to $15 a head. The venue has earned plenty of accolades through the years, including several national awards.
One of the hardest working men in hip-hop, Astronautalis' touring adventures in 2012 have included hitting Europe with Bleubird, supporting the Flobots on the East Coast, and very soon hitting the w... More »
Whether you are a co-ed just dropped off at the University of Minnesota, or a high schooler ready to break out of the 'burbs for a night, navigating your live music options can feel as difficult as not failing calculus again. With a system set up... More »
There's a reason it keeps on winning. Located in Burnsville, the Garage is one of the few joints in town that offers teens a break from their parents' basements and also spares them the embarrassment of getting turned away from a 21+ show. Many Twin Cities venues have all-ages nights, but this place keeps it all ages, all the time. During the day the Garage serves as an after-school youth center, offering everything from homework help and Guitar Hero sessions to weightlifting and support groups. But at night the Garage transforms into a bona fide club (minus the booze) that helps promote the local music scene. On any given weekend night, the Garage will host four or five local bands, while charging only $5 or so for an entrance fee.

For the under-18 set, seeing loud music in a club usually means waiting for all-ages shows at the Triple Rock, Station 4, the 7th St. Entry, or the Red Sea. Teen-friendly spots such as the Depot, the Toybox, the Fallout, Rudie's Coffeehouse, Club 3 Degrees, or the reopened Eclipse Records offer other options. Against that robust list, the Garage might seem like just another rec center--and in suburban Burnsville to boot. Yet this teen club is unusually inclusive: no age restrictions, no... More »
The under-21 music scene is as diverse as any other kind, with a host of small venues catering to young people--community centers, bars with all-ages nights, high school cafés. Yet only one club in town has shows every weekend without age or genre restrictions. Founded in 1999 with backing from the city of Burnsville, the Garage features live music Fridays and Saturdays between 6:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. (as well as Thursdays when school's out), and these events routinely fill a... There are clubs with all-ages nights, and teen centers with age restrictions (for a full list of both, visit complicatedfun.com/allages). But the Garage is all-ages, all the time. Opened in 1999 by Eric Billiet, with help from the city of Burnsville, the suburban rock and hip-hop mecca has created a scene all its own in Alexander O'Neal's longtime backyard, with a staff of youth volunteers working in cooperation with adults to create an atmosphere that's safe, tolerant, and fun. Local bands... More »
City Pages readers over 21 years of age will be forgiven for assuming the Garage takes this category by default. It has been a rough year for minors who want to see live, amplified music. The Babylon Gallery burned down, the Fireball Espresso Cafe met the wrecking ball, and Eclipse Records closed with plans to relocate. Hip-hop nights at Bon Appetit are as much of a memory as shows at the Foxfire Coffee Lounge, while other venues, however valuable, enforce time and day restrictions on age... More »
