The menu at Andrew Carmellini's Soho venture hopscotches across our mighty country while giving props to Japan, Mexico, Italy, and beyond. Be forewarned: The restaurant is deafeningly loud, and service could be more attentive. But the food makes a visit worthwhile. Menu highlights include the oyster sliders, dressed crab, asparagus okonomiyaki, lamb neck mole, rabbit pot pie, and fried chicken. There is chocolate cake, and then there is chocolate cake that would make a priest put his fist through a stained-glass window. The devil's food cake that Kierin Baldwin makes at the Dutch falls squarely into the latter category. Baldwin's genius lies not so much in the cake's impeccably moist and fudgy crumb, but in twists like the addition of crunchy cocoa nibs to the cake layers and black pepper to its boiled icing. The latter is equal parts divinity and dark mischief, and utterly worth... More »
