Description

The Cruise Room could be Denver's most iconic spot. It's located in the Oxford Hotel, so its marble floors echo with Denver history, stretching back to the late nineteenth century, when Union Station was the crossroads of the Rocky Mountain West and Bat Masterson relieved himself in the giant urinals in the basement bathrooms. But the Cruise Room has more recent history, too: It was renovated in the '30s to look like the lounge on the Queen Mary (hence the name), then got a quick remodel a decade later when the German toast -- one of a dozen circling the walls of the bar -- was deemed politically incorrect; in the '60s, it was the headquarters for a group of carousers known as the Evil Companions. Today, you'll find all kinds of passengers hopping aboard a stool in the Cruise Room -- tourists and business types staying at the hotel, longtime fans who've moved from the suburbs to LoDo lofts, hipsters who've discovered the joys of strong martinis. And good food: McCormick's, which has a bar and dining room flanking the Cruise Room, serves its menu of steaks and seafood in here, too. Ahoy!

  • 2009 | Best Classic Cocktail

The Cruise Room is the very definition of a classic. This cocktail lounge in the historic Oxford Hotel opened the day after Prohibition ended -- and it's been this town's most liquid asset ever since. Modeled after a bar on the Queen Mary, the narrow, neon-lit room boasts original art-deco decor, bas relief depicting toasts from around the world (Hitler was erased in World War II), uneven marble floors, a great jukebox and rarely an open seat at either the bar or one of the cozy booths.... But you won't mind standing, because that just gives you a better view of the bartenders as they mix up classic cocktails, everything from martinis served with their own shakers to greyhounds made from fresh-squeezed grapefruit. All aboard!
