One bar, one wall of booths and a few tables compose The Cock & Bull, one of the smallest pubs around town, but the inviting neighborhood atmosphere makes up for the lack of elbowroom. Old wood, red-painted walls and country paintings of its namesake cock and bull make the English pub come alive. It's known for the burgers, and the menu includes an artisan cheese plate with a seasonally rotated selection, black garlic quail and lamb loin, among other English-oriented choices. Other features include brunch Saturday and Sunday, daily happy hour specials and free Wi-Fi.
We love to drink here at the Observer. We take no shame in our excessively inebriated stories, and actually work hard to pack as much beer and liquor into every post possible. But as much as we love b... More »
Corned beef and other forms of brisket may be the greatest form of deli meat to grace two pieces of bread. When that brisket is lovingly handcrafted, brined, braised, smoked and sliced on-site, it tra... More »

It didn't take long for it to succumb to the McKinney Avenue virus. Or was it those debilitating stout trots? Whatever it was, O'Dowd's Little Dublin appears to be on ice. Last week a simple sign on the door said as much, but it's hard to pin... More »
Like its nearby Lakewood neighbor The Lakewood Landing, The Cock and Bull hardly screams high class from its exterior. In fact, you're far more likely to walk on past it and never even know it existed unless you walked this block of Gaston with a watchful eye. When you get inside, there's nothing too fancy about the place either—looks like a dive bar, really. But then you glance to the back of the room and notice the chalkboard: Wow, a steak special...for $22? What kind of place is this? So you ask for a menu, and you look at your dining options. Hey, you think to yourself, some of this looks pretty good! And, boy, is it—although some of it can get a little pricey. For the most taste bud pleasure for your buck, your best bet's the Blue Bell Burger. Trust.
Super divey and delicious food.
Never have I been so surprised about bar food - had a mushroom ravioli in basil cream sauce here that was TO DIE for. I hear their burgers are stellar, too.
