  • 2011 | Best Hotel Pool

If you're just looking to swim in some treated water, any hotel pool in the Valley will do. But if you're looking for a bona fide swimming experience -- complete with multi-sensory special effects -- then the Clarendon's pool is the only place to go. This boutique hotel's got the most impressive pool area in town, "The Oasis." In addition to being a work of art, complete with a 20-foot-tall glass water wall and a Sicis Italian mural with platinum and gold accents, the pool is state... More »

  • 2010 | Best Boutique Hotel

There's a lot to love about this trendy, neatly decorated hotel, but our fave amenity here is the rooftop deck and lounge, where we like to sip a Mai Tai and gaze out at the amazing views of the Phoenix skyline and nearby mountain ranges. When we're able to tear ourselves away from this panorama, we like to head down to the swanky lobby, where we can grab another quick cocktail before heading into Gallo Blanco, a pretty cafe where we've had some of our happiest lunches and dinners in recent... • 2008 | Best Hang

For years, The Standard hotel in Los Angeles has been famous for its rooftop and even more famous for the pool parties hosted there. The Oasis, atop the Clarendon Hotel in Phoenix, isn't as notorious -- but, we dare say, it's better, if for no other reason than the people who hang out here aren't re-enacting their favorite episode of Entourage. The pool opened this year with underwater speakers -- which pipe in nature sounds such as birds chirping and the sound of running creeks... More »

  • 2006 | BEST SHADE

Don't expect to find howling coyotes and Monument Valley vistas within the environs of the Clarendon Hotel's art-friendly lobby and spacious suites. From nude portraits by Chris Raboin to Leigh Merrill's abstract photographic landscapes, the stylish boutique hotel boasts a variety of local artists, including the hippest window shades in town. Created by eye lounge painter Doug Oland, who uses a fairly formal painting style in the way he makes marks and builds through layers, the sliding... More »

  • 2005 | BEST PLACE TO GET BUSTED

Downtown Phoenix's answer to Scottsdale's James Hotel snags the above category not because you might get busted by the po-po if you have one too many of Carson Quinn's martinis at the Camus bar/restaurant and then try to drive home. There's another reason. In the lobby of this newly renovated, baby-blue boutique hotel is a lifelike bust of AZ's legendary journalist-martyr Don Bolles, whose white Datsun sedan was torn apart by six remote-control-detonated sticks of dynamite on June 2, 1976,... For years, The Standard hotel in Los Angeles has been famous for its rooftop and even more famous for the pool parties hosted there. The Oasis, atop the Clarendon Hotel in Phoenix, isn't as notorious — but, we dare say, it's better, if for no other reason than the people who hang out here aren't re-enacting their favorite episode of Entourage. The pool opened this year with underwater speakers — which pipe in nature sounds such as birds chirping and the sound of running creeks — and scalp-massaging jets for those of you pretty enough to risk being seen in public makeup-less and with wet hair. The jacuzzi holds 50 people at a time, but if it gets too crowded, there are plenty of cabanas and Italian sun beds to relax upon while you surf the Internet on the hotel's free Wi-Fi. The stars that light up on the bottom of the pool at night, combined with the view of Phoenix's skyline at sunset, make this place a must-visit and a great place to play tourist for the day — even if you've lived here all your life.

I've been going here on Saturdays lately to take yoga classes! The Clarendon partnered with SuTRA Midtown Yoga to offer classes on the rooftop pation and poolside - guests of the hotel can attend for free and SuTRA members just have to bring their class card. It's a great reason to get your workout done in the morning then lounge around by pool and grab a bite to eat from Gallo Blanco.
