When ex-NFL players open restaurants and bars, it's usually safe to expect a somewhat dumbed-down concept. But that wasn't the case in early 2011 when former Green Bay Packers linebacker Brian Williams opened The Cedars Social, a warm, '70s-inspired cocktail den across from the South Side Lofts. The upscale restaurant features a full-service kitchen, but the classic cocktail menu is the big draw. While The Cedars Social bartender balks at being called a mixologist, he still seems to take care to measure each dram diligently. Who wouldn't, though, with a former NFL linebacker standing on the other side of the bar?
The Cedars Social bartender Trina Nishimura knows an awful pickup line when she hears one. With almost a decade slinging drinks in Dallas, she's had a front row seat to our fabulous booze-fueled etiqu... More »
You've probably heard Micheal Martensen's name around town, most likely preceded by the word "mixologist." As a bartender at The Cedars Social, he's been credited with helping establish Dallas' old sc... More »
Yesterday we told you about Cedars Social's new all-you-can-eat Prime Rib special. To be honest, when I read the news release, I thought this was a pretty ridiculous event. I still do, but after talki... More »
Well, this strikes me as odd. Today I got a news release from the folks at Cedars Social. The subject? The restaurant is offering all-you-can-eat Prime Rib on Monday. Huh. All-you-can-eat meat. My f... More »
Everyone's favorite booze-soaked, chain-smoking, adultery-laden television series is about to disappear until 2013; yes, Mad Men's season five finale airs this Sunday on AMC. (If you need to catch up... More »
Go up to any bartender at The Cedars Social and order a Ramos Gin Fizz, one of the most complicated drinks in the cocktail canon. They won't even need to refer to a recipe. Instead, they'll build the drink straight from memory. Same goes for the Old Fashioned, which many on The Cedars Social staff can perfect while holding a leisurely conversation with a patron. That's because the bartenders at Cedars Social are a different breed. Their memories are infused with cocktail history, and should... More »
History and booze collide at The Cedars Social each night. When you walk up to the bar in the amber-lit pseudo '70s cocktail den, you're greeted with a drink menu cloaked in a folder that looks like a CIA top-secret mission assignment. Once opened, you'll find the menu, curated by barman Michael Martensen, divided by eras rather than composition. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better Old Fashioned in town. And in a vodka city, as Dallas has been described by several top mixologists, the... More »
The Cedars Social crowd is a hard one to define. It's a melting pot of sorts, consisting of young artist types, aging hipsters, trendy Uptowners and folks from the neighborhood, which is huge considering that the nearest adjacent building is South Side on Lamar. The commonality of all the patrons is the desire for well-made, refreshing beverages, which The Cedars Social has in abundance. Riding the wave of the Prohibition-era cocktail trend, the drink menu is divided into turn-of-the-century... More »
