The Buttery, a small diner on South Grand Boulevard, offers early birds and night owls a chance to get their grub on: The restaurant stays open 24 hours to serve up its traditional diner fare, including burgers and, of course, plenty of breakfast items, such as pancakes, eggs and a slinger. The Buttery serves breakfast anytime and only accepts cash.
Someone asked how The Buttery got its name. My parents Leon & Aileen Caldwell purchased the closed "Toddle House" I think it was maybe 20 or more years ago. They have owned many sandwich shops in St Louis. Anyway, we used to go to Sarasota Florida in the late 60's early 70's and there was a restaurant in Sarasota that we really enjoyed named The Buttery. The Buttery caters to all these people, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It's a classic bargain-basement greasy spoon: burgers, melts, sammies, deep-fried sides and breakfast at any hour. The regulars are friendly, if you're on a counter stool and up for a chat. As soon as regulars walk in, Dottie or Joyce... More »
For so long, we've had so many questions about the Buttery. What kind of a diner name is that? Does anybody actually go in there? And most important, why haven't we gone in there? So we did, and we weren't disappointed. The Buttery boasts one of the best cheap breakfasts in town (served anytime, 24/7). The vibe is mellow (and almost otherworldly, the way everything else seems to fall away as soon as you walk in the door). Then again, there's a kick-ass jukebox stocked with a surprising and...
