  • 2011 | Best Burger (Non-Beef Division)

Meat mouths often seek stupid-ass ways to semantically trip up vegetarians. Perhaps they think their witless snark will wipe the blood from their hands. (Not a chance, Sundance.) And if there's one oh-so-clever sass every herbivore has heard at least a thousand times, it's: "If you don't want to eat meat, why would you eat stuff that's supposed to taste like meat?" Because, dumbass, sometimes there is nothing finer than mowing through a hefty, comforting pile of delicious, on a bun with... More »

  • 2010 | Best Meat Loaf Slider

Admittedly, this is probably the only meat loaf slider in town. But that doesn't make the dish any less deserving of recognition. Sliders are the ideal bar snack, and the Deacon's take on them is divine. Three petite sweet rolls come stacked with buttery green beans and slices of meat loaf that are just a tad smaller than a hockey puck. The rolls are light and fluffy, the meat loaf is peppery and lusciously moist, and the beans are crisp and savory. For dipping, there are three dollops of... More »

  • 2010 | Best Bar Décor

Any pub that uses old album covers to house its menus, as the Bleeding Deacon does, betrays at minimum an affection for kitsch. The walls of the Bleeding Deacon, however, up the ante to profound love. Proprietor Mike McLaughlin calls the wall collage his "work in progress": There's at least a dozen beer mirrors, two piñatas and posters from punk shows he himself played in. Over the bar hangs a 1943 Mosin-Nagant rifle with a tiny flag popping out the muzzle proclaiming "Bang!"... More »

  • 2009 | Best Jukebox

The ubiquity of the search -- via cell phones, online directories and the far-too-trusted Wikipedia -- has overshadowed what we all used to do when we sought something special: browse. But if you take the power of search and integrate it into something that was made for browsing, you get a lazy, so 2009, bastardization of technology. Exhibit A: the Internet jukebox. ("There's no time for browsing 100 CDs -- I've got a bucket of Bud Lights to guzzle here!") That's why it's so... More »

  • 2009 | Best Burger (Non-Beef Division)

What makes a good burger is subjective, but it's safe to say that heft is always a plus. That's not always easy to find when dealing with non-meat alternatives, which is why the Bleeding Deacon's Veggie "Boudin" Burger is such a treat. A wheat bun can barely cushion the thick, hearty patty, which is composed of white beans, rice and a variety of savory Creole spices. Unlike other veggie burgers, this patty never crumbles as it's devoured -- and the slab feels as substantial as the... More »

Bleeding Deacon is a great little place to grab a bite to eat... the menu is not typical, but not too far outside of the mainstream. A personal fav is the meatloaf sliders and chocolate bacon dessert. Even though it's a few minutes drive, this a nice place to grab a bite after the Botanical Gardens.
