Like many new Brooklyn venues these days, the Bell House was birthed out of a '20s warehouse. Naturally, a space this big lends itself to a variety of joyously disparate events (i.e. the Harry Potter Yule Ball, Super Japanese Game Show Melee, Radio Happy Hour) punctuated by a mix of veteran songwriters (recently John Oates) and sizable indie-pop acts (Beach House and such). The Bell House's key decorations are antiquated, sinuous chandeliers and a wood panel branded with a buffalo, both of which are indicative of the venue's tattered, vaguely Western, Prohibition-era aesthetic. Also notable is "Fight Club," a monthly craft-beer-and-cheese-tasting event.
Ever been to a live broadcast of a radio show? Our guess is no, since the heyday of such events was more than 75 years ago. In that case, the L.A.–based show The Thrilling Adventure Hour may be your only chance to experience a humorous take on an... More »

Netflix, basically the long-form version of YouTube, is the culprit for many wasted afternoons where we fell down the rabbit hole of entire series of obscure and/or cult television shows. Guess we weren't the only ones. Jerm Pollet and Michael Austin, co-producers of the NYC Zombie Crawl, found out almost two years ago that they weren't alone, either. Rabid fans of Arrested Development, that acclaimed yet undeservedly ignored comedy, the pair were devastated when the show was canceled.... More »
In Motherless Brooklyn, Jonathan Lethem described the Gowanus Canal as "the only body of water in the world that is 90 percent guns." But recently, that benighted waterway has become home to an art and music scene that greatly improves the canal's sights and sounds--if not its particular stench. The latest to arrive is The Bell House, a bar and performance space set amid a strip of lowering warehouses. The exterior is unprepossessing, but inside, the décor toggles between... More »
