The Amsterdam Bar is by far one of the coolest bars in town. It's set up like a European-style bar, with a heavy German and Belgian beer menu. There is vintage fat-tire bicycle that hangs above the entrance. The huge backyard is perfect to sit out and catch the occasional band on warm summer nights.
Event Review: Badass Jazz with Shelley Carrol
Jazz can be fine in a jacket and tie, but it feels at home in the Amsterdam's relaxed, eclectic environment. The quartet - Shelley Carrol on tenor sax, flute, and voice, Dave Zoller on keys, Jonathan Fisher on bass and Andrew Griffith on drums - is more than enough to keep things interesting. Their repertoire is so broad and deep that every Monday has a unique flavor.
On top of that is the wealth of talent Shelley brings in. The flavor-of-the-week could be swing, big band, New Orleans, funk or a tribute - just based on who in the North Texas jazz scene is available. It's always good, and sometimes it's extraordinary!
The venue is perfect too! The Amsterdam is comfortable and feels timeless; like it was somehow "meant to be". Monday night's crowd is a smorgasbord - from hipsters to old jazzers - and it works beautifully. Lots of regulars, lots of people in the door for the first time. Very chill. Very friendly. Step out to the large patio for conversation or a smoke.
Two sets, starting 10ish and midnight. Worth dropping in every week to enjoy the music and people.
What is the ambiance or crowd like? What is the best night to go? Is there a cover charge or door list to get in?
place is always chill. they have board games you can play while you drink. They have the best jazz i have heard in dallas on Monday nights late. And it changes week to week. i have never been let down by Amsterdam bar. Great huge patio as well.

This Exposition Park staple isn't really a jazz club, but step into this European-styled bar on a Monday night and, traditional jazz room settings be damned, you're gonna see yourself as good a night of jazz performance as offered by any other venue in town. Bad Ass Jazz, as the night is called, is pretty much just what the title implies--a night of the region's finest jazz talents rotating in and out of the playing area in the back of the room, sharing smiles, drinks and enough... What's a bar without a TV tuned to this season's local sporting events, a bleating, mooing installation of Big Buck Hunter and overpowering neon lights advertising watered-down domestic light beers? Why, it's a bar with a little European sensibility, of course. The Amsterdam Bar says it right there in the name, but in case there was any doubt, the place carries Maredsous, Kronenberg and Hoegaarden on tap for the finicky import drinker. Oh, and that backyard bier garden helps the bar's... More »
