The Alembic is not to everyone's tastes: too loud/too hipster/too much of a bar/too fancy/ew, bone marrow? But in addition to stellar cocktails (one favorite, the Southern Exposure, contains gin, mint, and celery juice), the kitchen puts out some of the most unabashedly creative food in this city: jerk-spiced grilled duck hearts, seared albacore sliders with veal bacon, pickled quail eggs. It's American bistro menu is seasonal as well as science-friendly, and wildly affordable to boot. Some nights, the chefs put out a $35, three-course prix-fixe dinner. Cocktails extra, of course.

If you like choices at a bar, stop by one of Alembic's Savoy Cocktail nights, when its usual menu is replaced with copies of Harry Craddock's 800-plus-recipe tome. The book was written in 1930 by an American bartender who escaped to Europe during Prohibition, and contains recipes for drinks that feel modern again, like the Brandy Alexander, the Corpse Reviver #2, and the Old Pal. Navigating a volume of cocktails that large can be intimidating, but bar manager Daniel Hyatt knows his way... More »
Great cocktails, the food is incredible, and they just may have the best cheese plate in San Francisco.
This is one of the best Whiskey bars in SF. It a little surprising to find it on Haight Street and their dessert is the bomb!
