Description

This northern-style Thai restaurant makes a fine alternative to Sripraphai, with an overlapping menu, and food every bit as good. Thailand's Center Point is tiny, conjoined to a grocery store that you can shop in between courses. Lots of the menu action is in the salads, including one called num tok assembled from seared beef strips, purple onions, toasted rice, fresh mint, chiles, and lime juice. Keep your eye on the curries, too, especially jungle curry and sour curry, two northern favorites that lack the coconut milk thickening you might expect; ask them to be made very spicy. Plebian delicacies, like pork leg over rice, are also spectacularly rendered.

SarahDG: I'd say Fatty Crab, but it's way too expensive. RobtS: That's very frugal of you! SarahDG: Still, I'd like to bathe in the belacan-shot sambal, while eating the nasi lemak and being spoon-fed the assam laksa. RobtS: Sounds erotic. SarahDG: Let's forget you said that. Michael "Bao" Huynh has clearly been eating his Wheaties, what with a handful of new Baoguettes, Bar Bao, and Bia Garden, the new Vietnamese beer garden. Seems like a bit of a nutter, but he sure can cook. RobtS: You... More »
