Polka, Selena, and vaqueros. One of these three words probably flashes through the brainpans of most folks whenever they happen to hear a two-second flash of Tejano on the radio, usually right before quickly tuning to another station.
Had these narrow-minded ninnies bothered to linger a little bit longer and enjoy the bouncy rhythms and upbeat tempos inherent to most Tejano songs, they might have (gasp) expanded their dim musical worldview and learned a thing or two about the Hispanic genre. Like, the fact it was imported to Texas and Mexico by Germanic and Eastern European farmers in the 1850s, inspired such influential Latino artists as Los Lobos and Sam the Sham throughout the decades, and flirted with mainstream success via the late Selena in the ‘90s.
It also has a slew of subgenres – including norteño, Tex-Mex, and conjunto – many of which will be on the playlist of DJ Stixx during Tejano Thursdays at Karamba Nightclub. Expect to hear the former Mega 104.3 jock also spinning up such dance-inducing Latin styles as cumbia, salsa, and merengue during this week’s edition.
