Description

From its red- and green-striped exterior to the colorful rooster sculpture that stands outside the door, Taquerias El Mexicano has the feel of a Mexican tienda. Piñatas hang from the ceiling, and rows of Mexican spices for sale grace the wall behind the counter. What's best is that this restaurant serves mostly solid Mexican dishes for less than $10. Service is a little slow at times, and if you visit during lunch, you'll likely spend a full hour here. All meals start with sometimes-greasy chips and salsa. The carne asada, cochinita pibil, or al pastor tacos ($1.75 each or $6.95 for three) are tasty choices. Also try the daily specials, which can be steak or chicken fajitas or enchiladas. Or if you just can't choose one menu item, order a combo such as the taco, tostada, and enchilada. They are also popular and a good deal at $7.95. On weekends, specials include borrego enchilado (braised lamb served with rice, beans, and pico de gallo) and birria (Mexican lamb soup).

Fast, Cheap, and Out of This World

These days it seems as though nearly every woman I know under the age of 40 is pregnant or just had a baby. I've even been asked to be a godmother for the first time. So far, however, I have resisted the urge to have a child of my own. I figure... More »

  • 2006 | Best Mexican Restaurant

You might think tacos are the specialty here -- they usually are at tacquerías. Plus this place serves eight types, including spicy pork, steam-cooked beef, and roast chicken, as well as a mean brain taco, but we mention that only so you will note this joint's allegiance to authenticity. But what sets Taquerías el Mexicano apart from other local south-of-the-border eateries is not only its tasty take on tacos, tostadas, and tamales, but also harder-to-find specialties such as braised lamb, spare ... • 2004 | BEST TACO

While some of the tacos (cow brain and pork intestine) on this menu would make good practice for potential Fear Factor contestants, Taquerias El Mexicano does offer a delectable array of tacos for the average eater, such as chicken chunks, carnitas, picadillo, and seasoned pork. For breakfast, we highly recommend the huevos rancheros taco. Served in crisp, golden brown corn tortillas or savory soft flour wraps in rojo, verde, enchilada, or cream sauces, these tacos will make you forget about... More »

  • 2003 | BEST FAJITA

Little Havana is changing. It used to be difficult to take the red peppers and mix them with the green, blend the onions with the grilled chickens and luscious strips of beef. But no longer. In a post-Elian world, you can bring it all together under the cover of a warm corn tortilla. Remember, fajita comes from the Latin word fascia, which means band, as in band together. So if you're going out for a little dialogue with your friends, why not stop at this Mexican restaurant, see the new... More »
