Set in a sprawling indoor and outdoor space with plenty of parking, Tap 42 is named for the number of craft beers available on tap. Coveted brews such as Left Hand Milk Stout sell out fast at this mecca for beer geeks. The bar also features eight liquor pulls and a handful of bourbon cocktails, should beer not serve a strong enough buzz. Thoughtful design details and an open space makes for a stylish bar scene. Texaco signs and old neon serve as backdrops against mismatched salvaged wood walls, Because of its minimalist decor, Tap 42 is often louder than the average restaurant. Burgers are the safe bet on the menu, with the rest hit and miss. A Brussels sprout side arrives still crunchy. A pork belly appetizer plates under salted, lacking flavor. For now, Tap 42 remains a drinking destination, though a lovely one at that.

Shortly after Tap 42 opened, New Times panned it in a January review, and commenters on Yelp and Urbanspoon went nuts complaining of lax service and uneven food. Some restaurants shutter after such a rough start, but Tap 42 responded by hiring a new chef, a new manager, and a staff that's nearly unrecognizable from opening night. The changes are dramatic. The service is now spot-on, with a staff that's educated about the extensive beer, bourbon, and wine lists. The kitchen is putting out... More »
This beer mecca is a stunner. Reclaimed wood from Washington, Montana, New York, and Oregon textures the walls in a rhythm of varying widths and subtly different shades of brown. Douglas fir from Oregon outfits tables. Floors are lapped with concrete, while the bar base is made of steel. Rebar runs the length of the ceiling overhead. The only "art," if you'd call it such, is a drawing of a tree that explains each beer's origin as a lager or an ale, and a gas station sign from a West Texas... More »
