Description

Wine bars can be tricky if you're not familiar with the scene. Like specialty coffee, a decided air of pretension can fill the air, but the Tangled Vine is a down to earth spot for wine lovers on the Upper West Side. What's more is that they’ve paired the approachable service with exotic foods at reasonable prices. They’ve got a burger and meatballs, of course, but also chicken liver mousse on grilled bread, and pork belly, as well as fresh oysters from always-changing locations. More noteworthy is the service from a knowledgeable staff who will take time with those new to the whole "fine wine" thing. Wine pairings are suggested for every item on the menu, along with reasons why each wine works with each food. Weekend jazz livens things up a bit, but the food and wine alone might be enough for a spontaneous weekday drop-in. --Shane Barnes

    Squid ink is one of nature's most perfect seasonings, and it's put to expert use at the Tangled Vine Wine Bar in a wonderful version of fideos negros. The Spanish dish is made from short, thin noodles--likely of Moorish origin--plus braised cuttlefish, all of it dyed midnight-black by oceanic ink, plus a squirt of garlicky aioli for richness.
