Decorated in a nautical theme, Tampico favors function over form and serves fresh, Mexican-style seafood at the edge of the Heights along with Tex-Mex staples such as quesadillas, queso and fajitas. You get to pick the seafood you'd like as well as the way it's prepared, although most seem to choose fried. The signature dish is Snapper a la plancha, and for good reason.
Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historica... More »
You won't find the mojarra a la plancha ($14.99) on the menu at Tampico Seafood & Cocina Mexicana (2115 Airline, 713-862-8425). But you will find mention of it on the delivery truck that sits outside the restaurant, which proudly proclaims "Home... More »
John Stage, the founder of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, a famous barbecue joint in upstate New York, was here in Houston for a barbecue convention a couple of years ago. He and his posse asked me to recommend a restaurant. They had already eaten a lot of... More »

Named after the seaside city on the Gulf Coast, this oyster bar and grill has brought the best of Mexico's seafood traditions to the North side. You never have to wonder what kind of fish you are eating... More »
Tampico Seafood & Cocina Mexicana There are a lot of Mexican seafood restaurants in Houston, but none is as consistent as Tampico. Named after the seaside city on the Mexican Gulf Coast, this little oyster bar and grill has brought the best of our neighbor's seafood traditions to the north side of the border. You never have to wonder what kind of fish you're eating here; you buy your whole fish from the counter and pay for it by the pound. It's seasoned with red achiote paste and served a la... More »
This bustling little Mexican seafood shop-turned-restaurant near the Farmer's Market serves some of the best red snapper in the city. There isn't any question about whether you're being served real Gulf snapper or how fresh it is, because here you walk up to the seafood counter and pick out the fish yourself. They weigh it and then grill it to order, along with fresh shrimp, scallops or anything else you want. Don't miss the seafood cocktails, parfait glasses full of fresh shrimp, octopus,... More »
