Vegetarians hungering for something on the exotic side should head to Irving’s Taj Chaat House, where the menu is 100 percent meat-free and 200 percent more interesting than black bean burgers and tofu. The menu doesn’t provide much in the way of definitions or descriptions, so either do your research beforehand (“Siri, what is a dosa?”) or come prepared to throw caution to the wind and order blindly. For the uninitiated, dosas are thin crispy crepes wrapped around various fillings -- think Indian burritos, sort of. Fill out an order card and hand it to one of the friendly counter workers; first timers ought to try a couple dosas (the Bombay Masala version features a spiced blend of potatoes and onions) and a namesake chaat --basically a platter of various Indian tapas -- then visit the self-serve chutney bar and load up on exotic condiments. You might not know what the hell you’re eating, but it will most likely be delicious.
