A dusty lot off of Military Trail and Lake Worth Road is home to Tacos al Carbon, a destination for authentic Mexican food served 24/7. There are more than a dozen varieties of tacos, from chewy lengua to chicharron to carne asada, each inexpensive, each served with cilantro, lime, and onion in a pliant, fresh corn tortilla. Splash a little ultrahot orange salsa on there and your late-night taco binge will be complete. During the day, the taco trucks parked there spread out like worker bees to distribute the goods. At night, they return to a packed lot. You can even tell a bit about the patron by which window he orders from: A younger crowd gathers at the brick-and-mortar building on the east side, while adventure-seekers and buzzing party folk congregate by the food trucks parked in the west lot.
Blame it on the economy. Blame it on sky-high fuel costs, droughts, and that locally grown, organic craze. Really, blame it on whatever you like. No matter which way you slice it, food just isn't gett... More »

Not only does Tacos al Carbon serve authentic Mexican soul food good enough to grace the table of any proud abuelita; it's also open 24 hours a day, meaning that sweet release never has to wait. Tacos al Carbon spares no parts, crafting more than a dozen varieties of tacos out of succulent lengua (beef tongue), slow-stewed tripa (beef stomach), and deep-fried rounds of crunchy chicharrón (pork skin). Gringo-friendly varieties like grilled beef, chicken, and sausage don't disappoint... More »
Blather all you want about authentic Mexican food, but how do you know it? The old lady in the kitchen pressing tortillas? The "secret" spice recipe? Maybe it's a menu that unabashedly sells tongue burritos ($3.50), tripe soup ($6), pork skin tacos ($1.50), and shrimp/octopus cocktails ($7.99). You could count the number of Mexican families crammed into a tiny room on any given Friday night or point to the queue of exhausted migrant workers lined up at the taco truck in the parking lot. The... More »
"Autenticamente Mexicano" reads the sign above this roadside eatery, a tiny little place surrounded by the Guatemalan and Mexican districts of central Palm Beach County. There's hardly a gringo in sight within. (They probably wouldn't know how to mix and match the pineapple, guava, and tamarind sodas with the rich selections from the cooks' steam table, anyway.) But even the monolingual really need to know only one word here: burrito. The fresh flour tortillas are unbeatable -- supple,... More »
