Description

Husband-and-wife owners Cbabi and Reine Bayoc operate SweetArt as a vegetarian and vegan restaurant, a bakeshop and a gallery for Cbabi's artwork. The lunch menu is brief: sandwiches, chili, a soup of the day. The standout dish is the "Sweet Burger," a veggie burger like no other - a mixture of nuts, chopped vegetables and textured vegetable protein that's as satisfying as a burger without trying to replicate the taste or texture of meat. The grilled cheese sandwich is very good, as is the three-bean chili. Save room for dessert, including cupcakes, cookies and other baked goods.

  • 2011 | Best Vegetarian Restaurant

Contrary to popular belief, vegetarians and vegans are just like the rest of us. They have hopes and dreams, and when you cut them they bleed blood (albeit iron-deficient blood). And every so often they crave hunks of juicy meat. Here in St. Louis, vegetarians overcome their meat cravings at SweetArt, located in the Shaw neighborhood. SweetArt has mastered oxymoronical creations such as a vegan Philly cheesesteak and a vegan sausage breakfast burrito. The flavors, aromas and textures of the... More »

  • 2010 | Best Burger (Non-Beef Division)

Veggie burgers -- especially if they're vegan -- generally aren't feisty. They're docile, meek creatures that prefer to coast on their healthy attributes. (In dating parlance, you might say they "have a great personality.") Sweet Art's vegan Sweet Burger, on the other hand, is a rebel. A wheat bun cradles a fat tomato slice, fresh lettuce and a crumbly patty made from, among other ingredients, lentils, onions and carrots. Thanks to a blend of spices -- including but not... More »

  • 2009 | Best Cupcakes

Cupcakes are good for you. OK, well, maybe not as good as a plateful of kale, but SweetArt uses no mixes, no trans fats and no high-fructose corn syrup, so you've got that going for you. And make no mistake: SweetArt's 'cakes taste every bit as sinful as their less-wholesome counterparts. From the Red Velvet to the Almond-Amaretto, from the Cookies and Cream to the Come-Hither Carrot, every offering leaves the mouth craving more. Other standouts: the Elvis (banana cake with... More »

  • 2009 | Best Décor

Some might say the Bayocs, owners of SweetArt, cheated to win this category. They didn't need to hire consultants or pay an artist to decorate the walls. SweetArt is a combination café and art studio, and all of the walls feature artwork from co-owner and local artist Cbabi Bayoc. If having one of his wife's (Reine's) homemade cookies or cupcakes doesn't make you smile, the priceless expressions on the figures in Cbabi's paintings surely will. The bright paint on... This unique cafe has amazing artwork for sale on the walls, and has some of the most delicious, home-made cupcakes in town! Strongly recommend the Elvis!
