Description

Some of the best sandwiches in the state can be found in the cheese shop here, made out of their hundreds of cheeses, artisanal salamis and cold cuts, roasted meats, and inventive vegetable salads. It's a perfect lunch destination when you're out on the happy errand of buying cheese, wine, or liquor. The cheese shop here has the largest selection in the state, stocking everything from the most deeply flavored six-year-old gouda to honest-to-goodness just-off-the-airplane Italian ricotta. The wine shop is enormous and the liquor selection beyond compare.

Since setting up shop shortly after Prohibition, the Surdyk family has demonstrated a commitment to customer service and product research and selection. At any given time, you can visit the deli and work with a knowledgeable consultant to create a custom platter with cheese originating from over a dozen countries and the freshest meat from regional suppliers -- sure to impress even the most critical foodie taste buds. Whether you need to pick up hors d'oeuvres for a holiday party, have... More »

  • 2008 | BEST CHEESE SELECTION

After all these years we tend to take Surdyk's for granted, but every visit to the cheese shop reminds us why they are the best. With 300 varieties to choose from, it's hard to know where to start, but the Surdyk's staff is well-trained--they know cheese as well as their counterparts next door know wine. Fancy some samples from California's Pacific Coast Here's Mt. Tam's Cowgirl Creamery or Humboldt Fog. How about something unique from the British Isles Check out the Cornish Yarg... More »

The problem with life is that it is full of life: the kids, the dog, the plumber, the job, the job, the job. Where does the fun fit in Time-management specialists will tell you that you have to make your fun a destination that sits on your calendar. Is that possible One of the things we love most about Surdyk's is the way they inspire us to make that destination appointment. Those wine-sale catalogs are a godsend. "The Surdyk's Summer Sale is coming," you say to the light of your life. "I... More »

  • 2006 | BEST CHEESE SELECTION

There is something reverent in the way Surdyk's staff offers slivers of cheese on squares of butcher paper, in their soft-spoken delight in describing a Gouda's four-year history, the buttery D'elice from near the Loire, a truffle-laced Sottoccenere from the Piedmont. No grab and go here; you stop, listen, and taste. Eureka! There is a hint of lavender in that chèvre from Wisconsin, that definitely is a mild bit of smoke in the Spanish San Simon. Serene, subtle, and efficient,... More »

How many sorts of blue cheese should a cheese counter have to win your admiration Ten Oh no, Surdyk's Cheese Shop can do better than that. Twenty Keep going. Twenty five Pshaw. How about 30! That's right, a recent visit to Surdyk's revealed more than 30 varieties of blue cheese, and not just your Stiltons, your Gorgonzolas, your Maytag Blues. Oh no. There's a raw milk blue from Massachussets, a buttermilk blue from Wisconsin, the Roaring '40s Blue from Australia, Neal's Yard Cashel Blue... More »

  • 2003 | BEST CHEESE SELECTION

At first blush it doesn't look like much happened during Surdyk's recent renovation. The walls are still bright white, and there are no plastic salamis dangling from the ceiling. But after a moment, you can appreciate the new layout's subtle efficiency. No more stumbling into a rack of fancy pickles (or another patron) while you peruse the gourmet groceries. No more wrangling with cheese-crazed mobs while you try to pick up pâté, now that the store has cleverly grouped the... More »

  • 2003 | BEST WINE AND LIQUOR STORE

Back in 1934 the 11th liquor license in the great state of Minnesota was granted to a Surdyk, and ever since then people named Surdyk have been selling wine and liquor to the most discriminating among us. A lot of wine and a lot of liquor. In fact, lately they have been selling us between eight and nine thousand different bottles of different things. How's that Well, a lot of it is in the hard-to-find category. If you are in need of the Chilean liquor Capel Pisco, or if you must have a... More »

  • 2002 | BEST CHEESE SELECTION

We do hear one complaint about Surdyk's Cheese Shop pretty often, and it runs like this: I went in last Saturday and it was full of other people! In my way! Cheese shoppers seem to be an especially sensitive bunch of flowers, nurtured as they've been on meaty Italian Taleggio; nutty, five-year-aged Gouda; double Gloucester; and creamy pyramids of American Coach Farms goat cheese--all of which you'll find in Surdyk's well-stocked shop. Admittedly, even the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed among... More »

  • 2001 | BEST CHEESE SELECTION

To our vast surprise, we just learned that Surdyk's doesn't have just the 300 cheeses displayed in its jam-packed cheese case. Honest to goodness, there are another 40 or so behind the scenes. They're nothing special, just the unspectacular Neufchâtels and low-glamour, low-fat Swisses that cheese-shop manager Sally Witham doesn't want obscuring her real treasures. But please note, Witham is hiding more cheeses than most cheese shops ever dream of showing! Truly, Witham is such a... More »

  • 2001 | BEST WINE AND LIQUOR STORE

There's an excellent selection of beer and spirits here, but the vino is where Surdyk's shines. Wine sales at this Minneapolis institution are intense exercises in cart-to-cart combat, as rabid, volume-buying shoppers furiously attempt to restock their cellars. To walk the aisles here is to travel the world of excellent wines, whether they originate from France, Spain, Chile, Australia, California, and anywhere else in the wine-producing world you can think of (as well as a bunch of places... • 2000 | BEST CHEESE SELECTION

Thank God for monks. Along with their other frugal toils (prayer, bird feeding, and the like) we must also credit the monastic brothers of old with civilizing cheese. Sure, Charlemagne loved his bloomy Bries, and Remus suckled on wolf's-teat fontinas, but it was berobed medieval men leading lives of quiet contemplation who established as holy the marriage of milk and time. The good people at Surdyk's understand this, on some divine level. Their smartly stocked cases are a testament to... More »

  • 2000 | BEST GOURMET GROCERY

We always try to avoid honoring an establishment in more than one category, but in Surdyk's case we've got to make an exception. Elsewhere in this section, we extol this tiny gourmet shop--an annex to Surdyk's landmark Nordeast liquor store--for its way with the fermented curd (see Best Cheese Selection). Here they get the nod for their all-around gourmetitude. The wee dimensions of this establishment belie the richness within. Besides the colossal selection of cheeses, you've got your... More »

After all these years we tend to take Surdyk's for granted, but every visit to the cheese shop reminds us why they are the best. With 300 varieties to choose from, it's hard to know where to start, but the Surdyk's staff is well-trained—they know cheese as well as their counterparts next door know wine. Fancy some samples from California's Pacific Coast? Here's Mt. Tam's Cowgirl Creamery or Humboldt Fog. How about something unique from the British Isles? Check out the Cornish Yarg covered with nettles. You can get a taste of the Basque region or the Greek Islands here, and you could spend hours selecting the perfect brie. Surdyk's cheese shop also offers a wide variety of complementary purchases, including bread from Rustica and the New French Bakery, two racks filled with every kind of olive oil imaginable, a refrigerated case stocked with spicy salami, and much more. The place is always bustling with patrons waiting for their numbers to be called or bumping baskets filled with freshly wrapped purchases. It's like every day is a special occasion here, and indeed, there's nothing more festive than wine and cheese. Surdyk's offers the best of both.
