Sue Ellen’s has been a staple in Dallas’ gay and lesbian nightlife since 1989. In 2008, it relocated to Throckmorton Road, where it neighbors many of the city’s most popular gay and lesbian clubs. Advertised as a predominantly lesbian bar, the new two-story building hosts live bands throughout the week, karaoke on Mondays and a large disco ball suspending over the club’s spacious dance floor. Sundays are the bar’s mellowest night, when people gather to play skeeball, pool and darts, or hang out in the bar’s gated patio out front.
You can’t escape it. On walks, at the dog park, in the pet store, everybody wants to know: “What kind of dog is that?” and the answer is never just “The kind that loves me.” Tell somebody you’ve got a retriever or pug mix and your pup is showered... More »
While Dolly Parton with a predominant Adam's apple seems more believable than Willie Nelson with voluptuous boobs, Reverse Karaoke has both. Sue Ellen's and the International Gay Rodeo Association present the 2011 WGRF Kickoff Party. This... More »
On the first Friday of every other month, drag king "community" Mustache Envy takes over the Vixen Lounge at Sue Ellen's bar on Cedar Springs. The performance is a hybrid of a drag show and variety show and includes local drag kings, musicians and burlesque dancers. The high-energy and engaging event is a perfect way to blow off steam after a long workweek, especially since cover is cheap ($3 before 10 p.m., $6 after) and drinks are cheaper (happy hour runs until 8 p.m., and there are $4.25... Sure, the old place had its charm: Nothing says "lesbian club" like indoor/outdoor carpet, after all, and Sue Ellen's old locale had that in spades. But the old gal just grew too big for her khakis. The last few times we went there, it was wall-to-wall ladies, and not in a good way. There was no room to play pool, no room to mingle, no room to dance. So Sue Ellen's up and moved around the corner, and she moved into the 21st century while she was at it. The new Sue Ellen's is... More »
This longtime staple and only bar geared toward the ladies on the Cedar Springs strip ranks right up there with old faves JR's and Station 4. What sets this apart from the others is its friendly, welcoming style to anyone who walks through the door. Gay or straight, a good time is hard to miss with DJs spinning radio-friendly tunes for the dance floor or the huge outdoor patio that plays host to live bands throughout the week. While the boys know how to dance, the girls know how to rock. And... More »
Call us naïve, but we were shocked to learn the predominantly female audience at Melissa Etheridge's recent Fort Worth concert booed when she pulled a fan onstage to share a tequila shot...because she chose a man. Being of the male persuasion ourselves, we've always felt welcome at most of the area's lesbian clubs. We've heard tales that gay places like the gargantuan Village Station and Moby Dick aren't nearly as hospitable to women. Hell, there have been nights when the Station wasn't... More »
