There's a good reason Subway has carved out a reputation as a health-conscious fast-food chain: Its founder, Fred DeLuca, started his first sandwich shop in 1965 as part of a plan to earn money to pay for medical school. From those humble beginnings in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Subway has become the Goliath of the submarine sandwich industry, with more than 37,000 locations around the world. Diners in New York and beyond certainly still think of Subway when they think of sandwiches, but the company is also tackling the breakfast market with an assortment of ham, egg and cheese offerings. The chain, which underscored its healthy-eating concept with a series of ads featuring spokesman Jared Fogle, has begun offering gluten-free bread in some locations, and has also reduced the salt content in some of its better-known sandwiches.
