With so many New Yorkers migrating to Miami, you'd think we'd have the staples of that city mastered. Although we have plenty of options when it comes to a towering pastrami sandwich or a perfect lox-and-cream-cheese bagel, we're still lacking in the all-important pizza-by-the-slice department. That is, unless you live near North Miami, where Steve's Pizza has been a neighborhood institution since 1974. The little joint has nailed the look and feel of a local hangout: It's always crowded, especially Sundays; the dingy walls are covered in graffiti; and the slouching, tattooed cashiers take your order with the proper air of indifference. The Olive Garden this ain't, and thank God for that. The brick-oven, no-frills pizza would survive in Brooklyn, and that's saying something. Steve's has mastered an irresistible sweet tomato sauce and an artfully simple crust that's crisp on the outside and comfortably doughy inside. And the pastas are excellent as well. Try the spaghetti and meatballs and the baked ziti. But the real deal is pizza by the slice done right - a rare delicacy in the subtropics.
"What's your favorite restaurant?" That question got us all thinking. If we had to choose one top dog at gunpoint, what would it be and why? Recently Short Order bloggers began celebrate their favorit... More »

Impoverished Neapolitans originally made pizza as a means of using up their abundance of tomatoes in a filling, inexpensive manner -- a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkling of herbs, and they'd pop the tomato-topped bread into a searing wood or... More »
Few foods are as ubiquitous as pizza. And most people will agree that even a bad piece of pie is better than most foods done right. Yet the search for truly great 'za is a lifelong journey, and anyone with taste buds has an opinion on the best. Our pick for that hallowed title: Steve's Pizza. The cozy North Miami counter serves delectable tomato sauce and gooey-cheesy goodness on long slices of fresh-baked dough in the tradition of New York-style pizza. And at the risk of invoking... Where else can you relive your teenage years by playing vintage video games (still a quarter, natch), munching on some of the city's best pizza, and listening to Led Zeppelin? Even Sunset Place's GameWorks has ditched its Galaga machine and tuned into the current Top 40. But in this perennial oasis of simple pleasures (well, at least till the 3:00 a.m. closing time; 4:00 a.m. on weekends) you can blast aliens to your heart's content while remaining safely tucked back in 1985. And should you... More »
Don't get us wrong. Steve's pizzas -- hot wheels of steaming mozzarella on firm, chewy crusts -- are a delicacy any time of day (and Steve's starts baking 'em around 11:00 a.m.). But sometime around 3:00 a.m., when you're on your way home from a long night of bar-hopping or you're already in bed, wishing you had just a little something to nosh on, a slice from this (nearly) round-the-clock pizza stand acquires transcendental meaning: Someone in the universe cares -- cares enough about you to... All you have to do is walk into Steve's and you know you've entered pizza nirvana. For one thing the whole place, really just a glorified stand, smells like the pizza shops in Milan. Then there are the New York-style pies, wafting just a hint of oregano toward you, that are constantly coming out of the oven. The oozing mozzarella, the tangy marinara, the dusky, charcoaled crust -- it's enough to make you drool just standing there. But we should warn you: Hold on to your patience. Even... More »
Old school pizza
Steve's pizza is pretty damn good - but they can sometimes be inconsitent. Sometimes it is just allright. That seems to be during the day.
The delicious and large slices of thin crust pizza are enough to fill you up without being too overwhelming.
