It's surprisingly difficult to find good late night ice cream in Manhattan, but that’s just what the Lower East Side’s Stellina provides. A sister store and neighbor to the full restaurant Sorella, Stellina takes that space’s feminine aesthetic and ramps it up, along with the ice cream flavors. Chunky Sorella is packed full of salted pretzel bits and chocolate fudge, while the peaches and cream tastes exactly like that. Get your flavors as scoops or shakes, and small food is also available in the form of cakes, cookies, or sandwiches. Coffee, too. However, traditional flavors (vanilla, chocolate, etc.) aren’t usually featured outside of milkshakes, so diners should have a bit of an open mind. There’s a monthly special, too, but unlike other new dessert places that push ever-changing menus, Stellina offers consistency, and that's fine for us. --Shane Barnes
Stellina's gelato is a hybrid of Italian tradition and American irreverence, which means it comes in flavors with names like Bananimal and Cinnamon Toast, and is paved with animal crackers, chocolate-covered marshmallows, brownies, and other bits and pieces that would probably incite a riot over at Grom HQ.
