Was there ever a point at which Stella Sola wasn't one of Houston's best restaurants? From nearly the day that it opened, this Texas-Tuscan hybrid has been wowing diners with house-cured charcuterie, a pork-centric menu that even features a roast suckling pig for two and a wine list that's far more affordable than it has to be. But there's more than just pig at Stella Sola: The kitchen treats Gulf seafood and other Texas ingredients with the same care, as seen in dishes like a tomato-and-fennel-thickened seafood stew and chilled rock shrimp with a pancetta vinaigrette. The bar, too, has excellent old-school cocktails and an even more casual vibe than the already dressed-down restaurant.

The best salad in town at a place best known as a palace to pork, a monument to meat? Yes. And that's because Stella Sola treats its vegetables with as much care and love as it does its many proteins. The Dal Giardino salad -- which translates to "from the garden" in Italian -- epitomizes this attitude toward showcasing fresh, local produce. Seasonal lettuce and other vegetables, like curling tendrils of watercress, mingle with pickled carrots in a Meyer lemon vinaigrette that... More »
Yes, Stella Sola is owned by local celebrity chef Bryan Caswell, and yes, Stella Sola can be a bit pricey for dinner and wine, but brunch is its great egalitarian offering. Served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Sunday, brunch brings nothing less than this "Texas-Tuscan" restaurant's spot-on food at far more reasonable rates. Knock down a "toad in a hole," with egg housed in homemade brioche, along with ham, mushrooms and cheese, for only $9, or grab a plate of shrimp and polenta (which is... More »
