Description

Poutine, baby. Pou-friggin'-tine. It's the answer to almost every question mankind asks, the cure to damn near anything that ails us. And you know where you can get some fine poutine? At chef Kevin Davis' Steelhead Diner. Made with Beecher's cheese curds from right around the corner, a trained chef's version of cheap diner gravy, and perfect french fries, Steelhead's poutine is a lowbrow dish served in a very high-tone setting. True, Steelhead's the kind of place that often fills up with suits and swells and beautiful people out flexing their new haircuts and business cards at each other, but sometimes you have to look past the crowds and the surface details to find the really good stuff. And at the Steelhead, that really good stuff includes Davis' idea of the American diner "evolved"-buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches, fish and chips, meatloaf served with juniper sauce and parsnip puree rather than mashed potatoes, and slices of pie filled with caviar. Personally, I love the upscale/lowdown fusion Davis does here, and though I do generally try to get out before the bar starts filling with martini sippers, I could easily live for weeks on nothing but the kitchen's poutine and a couple cases of cheap beer-even if I'd have to get the cheap beer somewhere else.

  • 2010 | Best Poutine

In the list of great guilty-pleasure foods, few dishes can hold a candle to a plate of poutine artfully done. Second only to comedy writers, poutine is the greatest export of our neighbors to the north, and nowhere in Seattle is it done with more art and less irony than at Kevin Davis' Steelhead Diner. Sure, you can get a nice piece of fish here. You can eat a lovely pasta or a fancy po' boy or any number of other jumped-up classics of American gastronomy. But no matter how you try to deny,... • 2007 | Best New Restaurant

A lot of great restaurants have opened in the past year: Betty, TASTE, Bamboo Garden, Tavolata, the redone Osteria La Spiga, Pam's Kitchen. Here's why I think Steelhead Diner is the top of this year's class. Kevin and Terresa Davis have made a tourist-friendly Pike Place Market restaurant without sacrificing their integrity and taste. The former Oceanaire chef's menu manages to be at once personal (his New Orleans roots show up in everything from gumbo to hominy cakes) and civic-minded (he... More »

Steelhead has a lot of "Pro's" but also a lot of "Con's" that make more of a three star than anything else. The food is good and the menu changes often enough that you can't get bored but sometimes the offerings aren't as delectable as described. The place is noisier than some places, it is a 'Diner' afterall, but in large groups you find yourself almost on top of one another. Too crowded! The wine list is decent too but ask on quantity and availability. When I ordered a particular red for my group I was informed that they had one bottle remaining. Not bad considering there are others to select from but when being pressed to have the first bottle and 'move on from there' I wasn't impressed. The bar is nice however and if you're in for a drink before heading elsewhere it's a good place to stop. A peek-a-boo view of Puget Sound helps with that. If you're early and the weather is nice you can also get out on their patio. Price is comparable to most for what you get so there's no complaint there. Though the service? Flip a coin...
