Founder Gus Belt got Steak ‘n Shake off the ground in Normal, Illinois back in 1934, luring customers in part by grinding steaks into burgers while they watched. Today the chain has more than 380 locations in eighteen states throughout the southern and Midwestern U.S., including several in St. Louis, and its brand still revolves around upgrading the traditional hamburger sandwich with patties made from higher-grade beef. Shoestring fries, baked beans, and one of Steak ‘n’ Shake’s signature cold dessert drinks (milkshakes in mocha, peach, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and banana flavors) make one heck of a big meal, especially if one opts for the Double Steak Burger, which is not only enormous but allows its eater to dress it him or herself, as the pickle, lettuce and tomato are served on the side.
