Starrs has provided Richmond Heights with libations for more than 30 years. Now it serves prix-fixe dinners in its 60-seat dining room on Friday and Saturdays from 6 to 11 p.m. Stop by for Beef Tenderloin with Demi-Glaze Wine Port Sauce with Stuffed Tomato and pick up a few bottles of wine on the way out.
Spring is in the air, which means the smell of charred leeks is soon to be in the air as well. Chef duo Wil Fernandez-Cruz and his wife Lisa are hosting a Calcotada Festival on May 19 as a sort of wel... More »

There is a wine list at Starrs, but you don't need to see it. This restaurant is attached to a wine shop (Starrs Market), after all. Arrive early for dinner and peruse owner Bud Starr's wide and deep retail selection, which covers the expected regions and varietals without looking like it was copied out of a distributors' catalog. You can find pricey Bordeaux from acclaimed vintages, but you can also find rich, delicious Australian reds (without cute animals on the label) for less than $40. California reds are well represented and, for a special occasion, be sure to check out the reserve selection near the front of the store — or, for a special occasion on a budget, the selection of splits. Whatever you choose, the restaurant charges a reasonable corkage fee of $8. And if your wine retails for over $100, that fee is waived.
This place has a fantastic selection of wine, moderately priced. Plus a little fresh cheese and fun foods to complement wine. Plus, I hear they're opening a restaurant within.

If you're looking for a bottle of Captain Morgan's, by all means try Schnucks. But if you're one of those rare imbibers who relish the honeyed punch of aged rum, you'd do better to lift your snifter toward Starrs. The store, which also carries a small selection of gourmet goods, boasts one heck of a liquor cabinet. The beer selection is no slouch, either. And oh, the wines! Aligned in long, democratic rows, stellar premier crus rest alongside wines of humbler origin. Chiantis rub shoulders... More »
