Riverfront Times' Description
Worker bees in downtown Clayton have choices aplenty come lunchtime, but House of Wong is one of the best. Far from a nondescript takeout joint, this well-appointed restaurant is a downright delightful place to sit and eat. Lunch specials are a steal: $5.35 to $6.25 nets an entrée (Hunan beef, sweet-and-sour shrimp, hot braised chicken wings, etc.), a bowl of soup (hot-and-sour or egg-drop), two pieces of crab Rangoon and a choice of steamed or fried rice. While lunch choices are mostly Chinese-American standards, dinner brings more authentic, adventurous items, like chile-spiced prawns, salmon with black-bean ginger sauce and Szechwan-style bean curd. The food is consistently delicious, the service friendly and fast. Worth the walk for Clayton office workers -- and worth the drive for the rest of us. See listing for additional location under "West County."
In the past, the false promise of the ubiquitous $6 Chinese lunch would get us every time. In the past, the false promise of the ubiquitous $6 Chinese lunch would get us every time. Logically, we knew it was virtually impossible to get so much entrée, soup and fortune cookie for so little without cutting a few corners. And still, somehow, we'd be shocked when we received our plate of grease floating in oil accompanied by a tiny cup of more oil and a "fortune" that's really just some half-baked character analysis: "You do not learn from the mistakes of the past." Well, no shit! We are pleased to report that we have finally learned something: the $6 lunch at Clayton's House of Wong actually gives you what you hoped you'd paid for, like real meat, real vegetables, fluffy rice, spicy soup. Even the fortune cookie is good! (The fortune itself is not, but we can still praise House of Wong for valuing taste over pseudo-wisdom when it selects its fortune-cookie supplier.) Come by for dinner; it's an even better value.

The Szechuan Chicken is fantastic if you like spicy
House of Wong serves what has to be the best Hot and Sour Soup in St. Louis.
Egg rolls aren't anything special, but the Crab Rangoon are awesome!!
