Riverfront Times' Description

The Central West End feels complete again, now that Monarch owners Aaron Teitelbaum and Jeff Orbin have reopened St. Louis’ beloved Café Balaban as an homage to its late founder, Herbie Balaban. The menu features classic Balaban’s dishes — cucumber bisque, beef Wellington and, for dessert, the fabulous chocolate fritters — as well as more contemporary bistro fare. Standouts include beef short ribs braised with Schlafly APA, and yellowfin tuna crusted with black pepper and coriander. Neither the décor nor the vibe have changed much from previous editions of Balaban’s—it's still as refined and swanky as it ever was, and the sight of the crowded bar on a weekend evening will warm many a nostalgic St. Louisan’s heart.

Great food. Try the burger. And be sure to come out on Sundays and Thursdays for live music!

Try the short ribs! They are incredible! Switch the horseradish potatoes for grits if you want! Sooo good!
