    Event Review: St. Louis Aces

'Tis summertime once again. The birds chirp away the days; the trees, full of leaves, sway in the hot air; and the St. Louis Aces prepare to shatter the summer's stillness and rock the tennis court at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park (5620 Grand Drive). Our World TeamTennis Pro-League team kicks off its home season on Tuesday, July 6, with a match against the Springfield (Missouri) Lasers. Lindsay Davenport plays for the good guys, and the fans? Well, you will be encouraged to be rowdy — as you should be at all Aces matches — and mindful of the circa-1974 opening-night dress code, honoring the year World TeamTennis was cofounded by Billie Jean King. That's right: Wear your shorty-shorts and stripy knee socks with pride, and get to the tennis center by 5:30 p.m. to enjoy 1970s beer and food prices before the 7:15 p.m. match. Tickets to the evening of racquet-slamming fun cost $15 for kids and $35 for two adults (at 314-534-1111 or www.metrotix.com). Visit www.stlouisaces.com for the full schedule and details about the other theme nights.

The man spins and ducks, twirls and dodges, but ball after ball smacks him in the chest, back and legs. Those off-screen begin to laugh, as does the man himself. Inevitably a ball strikes the man's crotch. He yelps in pain. "Don't be stupid!"... More »
