Watch the No. 7 el rush by ablaze with light at this working-class canteen, for years the only authentic Thai restaurant in town, and the one we will always respect for teaching us how good Thai can be. At Sripraphai in Woodside, expect fiery curries, eggplants that look like miniature watermelons, and cases full of snack food. Our fave: catfish in spicy sauce.
Say 'salad,' and most folks think of a pile of leafy greens, with a cherry tomato or two thrown on top. Though crisp, refreshing, and sometimes squirted with interesting dressings, its never been more than a bit player in the theater of repast.... More »

Until recently, Gotham's Thai food lovers had a difficult choice: hang their heads in shame or move to Los Angeles. Then Sripraphai appeared, and we had at last one place to brag about. Now, more great Thai eateries are accumulating in Queens.... More »
In spite of the excellence of other places, Woodside's Sripraphai remains the best Siamese in the city. Where else can you get a beef tendon soup laced with blood (order the "dark" version), or a pig organ soup filled with liver, heart, and chunks of rich fatty meat? This was the first place in town to serve the specialties of the northeast region of Isaan, including fiery salads and schools of dried catfish. 64-13 39th Avenue, Queens, 718-899-9599, sripraphairestaurant.com (11377) More »
Why have a salad when you can have a fried one? That might have been the thinking behind the unusual yet beloved fried watercress salad at Thai stalwart Sripraphai. The green veggie is battered, then deep-fried to a crisp, topped with dried chiles and toasted cashews, all showered in a tangy fish sauce dressing and bolstered with shrimp. It's unlike any other salad you've seen--or tasted--and one well worth trying if you haven't already. 64-13 39th Avenue, Queens, 718-899-9599,... More »
In general, Thai lovers must go to Queens, where there's a resurgence of good Thai restaurants along Broadway in Elmhurst. The best Siamese in town, however, remains Woodside's Sripraphai. Don't miss the mouth-searing jungle curry, the much milder rice with mixed vegetables and budu sauce, or, best of all, the crispy fried catfish, which comes in a delicate lattice with a spicy sauce. This Thai is so good it belongs in L.A.! More »
