  • 2008 | Best Hardware Store

The thing about this store is that it seems so out-of-place, sandwiched between the oh-so-hip Montrose bars/tat parlors/dildo-supply outlets and the posh River Oaks boutiques. But there it is: a freakin' hardware store. Established in 1953, this maze-like mother is crammed floor-to-ceiling with tools, lawn supplies, paint, fertilizer, propane...and they cut glass, keys, pipes, you name it. In these days, when Home Depot and Lowe's (the Chili's and Applebee's of hardware) herald the... More »

  • 2007 | Best Hardware Store

This isn't a mega-size warehouse, and you won't find any people wearing orange aprons here. Instead, you'll find one of the oldest hardware stores in the city and a staff that can help you with the most obtuse of questions. By the time they're done answering you, you'd believe they built the city themselves if they told you so. Making your visit even more enjoyable, Southland is like a toy store for adults, a place you can browse for things you didn't even know you needed, until you saw them. More »

  • 2003 | Best Hardware Store

While The Home Depot and Lowe's continue to assert themselves as the Starbucks of hardware stores, putting the fear of God into more modest chains like Ace, this humble Montrose shop -- one of the oldest hardware stores in Houston -- is staying alive. Its smaller size makes it much more navigable than those monstrous hardware hangars, and the staffers are infinitely more knowledgeable. They'll help you find exactly what you need, and if it's not in stock, they'll order it or send you to a... More »

In these days, when Home Depot and Lowe's (the Chili's and Applebee's of hardware) herald the expansion of suburbia, it's good to know that genuine neighborhood hardware stores still exist. Now quit lollygaggin' and go buy some power tools.

I am an avid cyclist and ride my bike everywhere. This weekend I decided to stop by Southland Hardware on Westheimer to pickup some stuff for a project on my way home from work. Upon entering the store one of the clerks confronted me because I was carrying a backpack. Female customer were entering the store with purses. But the clerk and then a manager would not allow me to enter with my backpack saying it was against store policy. They wanted me to leave it behind the desk with the clerk. That was something I could not do since I carry my phone, wallet and my blood pressure medicine in my backpack. They would not provide any reasonable alternative such as having an employee accompany me or a secure place to lock up my bag… This is blatent gender descrimination. I have frequented this store for the past 15 years and regularly spend my hard earned money there, usually more then I should. On occasion I've run into this issue at other stores, but usually managers take one look at me and tell me to come on in and shop. I can not believe store owners are allowed to set up arbitrary rules like this with one rule for women and one for men. Its unequal treatment. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
