Emma Hearst, the young, tattooed woman running the kitchen, is a bit of a prodigy; she started running the restaurant in her early '20s, where she promptly started getting enthusiastic reviews from normally stodgy critics. The space has a hip, youthful vibe. Enter through an entrance on Allen Street to find a dining room outfitted with curved wooden ceilings, glowing wine racks, white brick and funky potted plants. The menu consists of shareable plates of Piedmont cuisine. Choose from dishes like crispy grilled veal sweetbreads with passion-fruit bacon sauce and a killer kale salad topped with squash, toasted almonds and Pecorino, as well as pastas like the oxtail risotto and agnolotti with beef short ribs, parmesan and sage butter. The long wine list features 25 wines by the glass and more than 150 by the bottle, with the majority of them from Northern Italy, all complemented by a selection of Italian and American craft beers on tap.—Keith Wagstaff

Broccoli is no bombshell. But the other night, it took off its nerd glasses and seduced my party with long, roasted stems and fluffy green heads, crisp under a veil of tempura. There were other dishes at the table, but for a few moments, we only... More »

Gorgeous, rich Piedmontese fare from chef/owner Emma Hearstaccompanies the excellent Italian wines chosen by co-owner SarahKrathen, who loves to talk about her list with diners. Sorella's sleek, candlelit wine bar is one of the most romantic and underrated spots in the city. Although it's on a particularly grimy stretch of the Lower East Side, there are few places we'd rather share a plate of tempura-fried broccoli with pickled-pepper aioli and Grana Padano and drink away the night, glass... Sorella has plenty of excellent Piedmont-inspired dishes to its name, but you'd be forgiven if you never made it past the grissini that land on the table before the beginning of the meal. Long and slender as Pixy Stix, they're baked until they achieve a deep tan and are presented in a white-paper cone that reclines against a thick linen napkin. They're crunchy and salty and, most dangerous of all, constantly replenished by the attentive waitstaff, who may as well be doling out crystal meth.... More »
