Description

The Twin Cities were forever changed the fateful night that this four-story tapas bar opened in the middle of downtown. It wasn't just the Gaudi-inspired architecture with all that Barcelona style that changed Minnesota. And it wasn't just that Solera has probably this country's best sherry list, and one of the best Spanish wine lists. It wasn't even the sunny rooftop party deck, with its house-music-all-night-long summer vibe. It was this: Suddenly Minnesotans of every income could get a taste of richly nuanced, deeply spiced, purely pleasurable cooking, at a quarter of the price that had made critics swoon. Sit at the chef-staffed tapas bar for the most purely gourmet treats (just ask the chef to cook for you).

  • 2012 | Best Tapas

Many of our best meals are spent with friends, drinking beer and wine while picking over small plates of great food. These are evenings with shouting, wild gesticulating, belly laughs, and fuzzy memories. This is not the time for staid dinner service. The best way to facilitate such a dinner is to hit the town for tapas. And no course of small plates is better than that put out by Solera. Chef Jorge Guzman's commitment to traditional Spanish food mixes with his Mexican heritage, and the food... More »

  • 2008 | BEST PLACE TO WATCH MOVIES OUTDOORS AT A BAR

Solera ranks pretty high on the list of bars with great views. Amid the skyscrapers and street-level Block E clatter, it's a posh-yet-casual experience. But the best viewing happens when Solera hosts its summer film series on its rooftop deck Sunday and Monday nights. Movies that have screened over the past few years include hits like Old School, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Austin Powers. Shown at dusk, the films are complemented by a drink menu that usually features a special... More »

  • 2005 | BEST RESTAURANT FOR APPETIZERS

Years ago we read a magazine restaurant column that advised readers to order another appetizer instead of an entrée, to ensure the greatest experience of the chef's skills and elite ingredients. So, we tried it in the Spago in Las Vegas, and have yet to recover from the withering disdain of the waiter, who saw this not as a thrilling tribute to his chef's skills, but as a cheapskate's gambit. Sigh. Today, life is better for anyone who wants to sample real cooking skill but isn't... More »

  • 2005 | BEST RESTAURANT FOR DESSERT

Is it possible that pastry chef Adrienne Odom is getting more accomplished, more creative, and just generally more great as the years go by? It defies conventional wisdom, but yes, we say yes, she is. Our proof? We stopped by Solera recently and had a dessert experience that knocked our socks off so profoundly that we may be forced to spend the rest of our days in sandals. First, first there were the dessert tapas ($8.50), a long, red-edged glass platter of five individual desserts. First... More »

  • 2004 | BEST RESTAURANT FOR DESSERT

We can think of about a thousand reasons why Solera is the best restaurant for dessert in Minnesota--yes, a dozen: 1) The enormous sherry list; 2) the sexy lighting; 3) the after-work-to-very-late hours, perfect for post-work birthdays or don't-let-this-date-die nights; 4) the romantic rooftop patio; 5) proximity to all the downtown-theater district stuff, and when else do you have dessert alone, except after concerts or a show; 6) marvelous Spanish cheeses for your savory dessert needs; 7)... • 2004 | BEST RESTAURANT--MINNEAPOLIS

The main thing that sets apart a great work of art, be it a novel, a painting, or a movie, from some crap at the mall is that it should be a fully realized vision, a completely thought-through, whole, interrelated, and complete event in which all the physical details serve the overall vision of the creators. Miraculously, Solera is such a being. Sure, you could say it's just a tapas bar. But that would neglect the beautiful flower-pod-doohickey that is the mosaic host stand. It would ignore... More »
