Lindell Boulevard, the broad street bisecting the Central West End, has never been a hip night spot, but the owners of Sol Lounge have breathed new life into the area with three massive floors of nightclub bliss. It's the perfect spot for A.D.D. club kids: If you get bored on one floor, find the nearest staircase and head to another. The main floor lounge hews to the swank club archetype, with exposed brick, low-slung couches, an impressive bar and progressive house music pulsating throughout. Up the stairs and through the bathrooms, then up another staircase, and you hit Reference, the club within the club. Up one more flight, and you're in the Attic, where you can people watch in a cozy corner or bust a move in the middle of the floor. The crowd is as diverse as you'd expect, and it's the only club in the west end with a 3 a.m. license. Keep an eye on their events, as Sol Lounge draws preeminent party starters like MSTRKRFT, Ladytron and Skrillex.
This was supposed to be the year the recession finally melted away. Yeah, that never happened. An economy both bolstered and hamstrung by the Internet continues its glacial pace, and businesses and organizations everywhere are struggling to prove... More »
Gregory Elmore has been the general manager at Sol Lounge for about six months now ("give or take a month," he says), and his passion for the evolution of the St. Louis nightlife scene is undeniable. Under Elmore's direction, the popular Central... More »
Bottle service is for rap stars, reserved tables are for wannabes and people with too much money, and we've got better things to do than wait in line to get patted down just for the privilege of busting a move on an overcrowded dancefloor. This is St. Louis. We only wait in line for Ted Drewes. It's the simple things in life: a leather couch in an intimate corner, an international DJ set with a reasonable cover, plenty of room to stretch out and scads of scantily clad pretty young things to... Some enjoy basking in the waves of social electricity a big, crowded lounge emits. Others prefer a more subtle, intimate lounge. Brian Schmitz's building at 4239 Lindell Boulevard -- the only 3 a.m. establishment in the Central West End -- offers both. On the top floor sits Reference, so called because the bar itself is a glass case filled with artifacts (such as photos and currency) all referring to people in Schmitt's life. (He plans to eventually cover every vertical space up... More »
Since last we met over the pages of a Best of St. Louis edition, we've all gotten a year older, a bit wiser, but also a smidge more fatigued. Hey, there's no shame in any of that! Remember: Being tired is not a sign of being feeble. It just means you need more coffee to keep you going till the wee hours. Thanks to the Grind coffeehouse and Sol Lounge (and their overlapping evening hours), incorporating the caffeinated beverage into your late-night plans has never been easier. From the front,... From the front, the Grind looks pretty much like a charming coffee shop. And it is. But walk around to a doorway on the side of the building — after getting your bean buzz on, of course — and you'll find that this entrance leads you into a spacious and gorgeous lounge, complete with super-high ceilings, great DJs, friendly bartenders and potent drinks (for that other buzz you crave). Plus, the diverse crowd ranges from the young to the less young, so everyone feels welcome, comfortable and, most important, ready to dance!
Great place to hear awesome DJ's and mingle!
Cool place.... if you're into techno. I'm not really, but I still had fun.
