A gem of a find tucked into a remote plaza north of Ortega Highway, Sol del Sur Bistro offers a Europe-heavy culinary trip around the world, with ingredients and flavor combinations not found anywhere else in Orange County, all at surprisingly reasonable prices. The menu changes with the seasons, but suckling pig ragù over handmade tagliatelle with grilled-pumpkin agrodolce was the perfect winter dish. Beet-and-goat-cheese salad gets a fantastic update with finger lime, an Australian fruit known as "citrus caviar." There are more than a dozen small plates and a reasonably good wine list; go in with friends, have tapas and wine and chat the evening away.

What haven't we said about Dave Emery that hasn't already been said? The man is an all-around crazy person--and we mean that with the utmost respect. He insists on making everything he serves at Sol Del Sur Bistro from scratch and doing it all himself, with no assistance from a sous chef or even a dishwasher. All evidence suggests he is self-taught and loves to cook just as most people like to breathe. He has working knowledge of Italian, Japanese, French and Spanish cuisines, gleaned... More »
