Well-conceived Italian food, served in either a chic and cozy dining room or a lovely plant-lined brick courtyard, is the draw at this small neighborhood restaurant, set off the street in a secret garden.
The second Dine about Town of 2012 kicked off on Friday with a smattering of restaurants all around the city serving a two-course lunch for $17.95 or a three-course dinner for $34.95. I got started at... More »
Carl, one of my favorite gastronomes, is back in town, and it's clear when he phones to set up a dinner date that he's in an Italian mood: "Have you already written about Quince? Or Incanto?" Yes, I say, and they're two of my favorite places;... More »

But you have to have an in to eat in the City... More »
With the exception of sushi houses, Italian restaurants are probably the most common venture for restaurateurs in this city. Sometimes they're good; often, they're not; and then, every once and again, we encounter a true gem like Sacramento Street's Sociale. Located in a quiet courtyard in the tony Laurel Heights district, this cozy trattoria/wine bar offers an unbeatable combination of friendly service, fine wines, and new-school Italian fare that could turn a person off Bolognese sauce...
