Forget your notions of what a candy store should be. We’re not saying remakes of retro candy aren’t delicious, but the shop that sells them doesn’t need to be stuck in time. Smeeks, “a sweet little shop for sweet little folks,” is an update on the candy stores of our grandparents’ generation. While you’re sure to find old timey treats like Abba-Zaba and C. Howard’s Violet, owner Georganne Bryant, who also operates Frances Vintage boutique, scours the country to stock Smeeks’ shelves with modern-day delights. The candy collection includes local treasures like Tracy Dempsey Originals and Goodytwos Toffee, as well as out-of-state imports including handmade Hammond’s chocolate bars in flavors like More S’mores and PB&J Sandwich and artisanal selections from Whimsical Candy like handmade sea salt caramels and the three-day labor of love called La-Dee-Dahs. Smeeks also stays on top of seasonal specialties, like Pumpkin Patch Pop Rocks in the fall and heart-shaped Valentine’s candies in February.
Twenty chefs, hundreds of people, and thousands of caramels -- Smeeks and Chow Bella's Caramelpalooza 2013, held Friday night at Biltmore Fashion Park, was (if we say so ourselves) the biggest and be... More »
We are practically in a sugar coma, just thinking about the line-up for Caramelpalooza 2013 -- the biggest and best ever, if you ask us. See also: - Caramelpalooza 2012: The Winners!Participating ch... More »

Hey sugar slingers -- you have just a few more days left to enter the most fabulous caramel tasting event (well, okay, the only caramel tasting event) of the year. See also: - Caramelpalooza 2012: T... More »
Sugar lovers, rejoice. We can't believe it's already time to announce the details for the sweetest event of the year, Chow Bella and Smeeks' fourth annual Caramelpalooza, coming Friday, April 5 at 7 ... More »
Much like the wide-eyed crew of kiddos who won golden tickets into Willy Wonka's colorful world, shoppers' jaws drop (and there might be some incidental drool) when they walk into Smeeks. And that's for good reason. To the very likely chagrin of Valley dentists, the small Medlock Plaza candy shop offers crave-worthy goodies including lollipops nearly the size of dinner plates, vegan chocolate bars, and such handmade treats as campfire marshmallows and salted caramels. Those really looking to... More »
You've got a birthday party to get to in half an hour, and an overpowering need for a potato gun. We know the feeling. And we've got the source: Smeeks. This "sweet little shop" is best known for its candy (and you can get sugared up here, for sure) but its selection of old-fashioned (harmonicas) and new-fangled (squirrel underpants?!) novelties keep us coming back, every time we need a fun gift. Or -- we'll admit -- a little something for ourselves. Hey, everyone needs a set of... More »
Yes, it's a candy store, but the goodies aren't all that's sweet about Smeeks. We've fallen hard for this little store -- from the free gumballs on the front counter to the $5 photo booth in the back. The place is chock-full of guilty pleasures you never knew you needed, like squirrel underpants, bacon Band-Aids, and sparklers that burn so bright atop a birthday cake they even scare the grownups. This is a place for kids of all ages, and old-school candy rules. Owner Georganne Bryant... More »
The first time we walked into Smeeks, we weren't sure whether to clap our hands in glee -- or cry. We really did tear up a little, after months of hearing about Georganne Bryant's dream to open a candy/novelty shop in the same complex as her wildly successful boutique, Frances. This place is a dream come true. For us, too. Yes, absolutely, there are retail gems in this town, but let's be honest. They are few and far between. We're frankly sick of going to places like Portland and Los... More »
A fun little candy shop and novelty store. They've got all the good stuff that you remember from when you were a kid (or even before that if you're young). I found some super cute salt and pepper shakers here, that I love - they are black and white swallows.
