Slo-Tom's Lounge is undoubtedly best described by local Americana-rock superstars The Bottlerockets in their anthem named for the bar: "I know where we could go when we ain't got nothin to do / All we're gonna need is a $10 bill, maybe we better bring two/ Baby let's you and me go down to Slo-Tom's / Let's go down to Slo-Tom's / Ain't much of nothing but it sure is something..." The humble south city hole-in-the-wall, named "Best Place to Drown Your Sorrows" in the RFT's Best Of St. Louis 2010, is one of the oldest bars on South Broadway. And while some bars are content to boast of a daily happy hour or two, here, Happy Tuesdays boasts a whopping six hours of discounts. With the right planning, you can drink all day Tuesday, sleep all day Wednesday and show up just in time for Thursday night Pool league. Just don't anger the canine head of security, Fat Girl, who rests quietly bar side, an unsuspecting (but adorable) staple to the Slo Tom's staff.

To call Slo-Tom's Lounge an anachronism is accurate but not entirely true. It is, perhaps, best described as a simulacrum, the sort of place you've seen in a thousand old movies, and maybe even your dreams -- but that never really existed. It's a little rundown, a little frayed around the edges, but all the more charming for it. There's wallowing, to be sure, but of an... More »
There's Alka-Seltzer for sale at Slo Tom's for the pain in the brokenhearted's gut. Buck-twenty-five cans of Stag help, too. So does a jukebox loaded with the saddest music in the world: Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Hank Williams. Even Dr. Hook, because only the truly miserable need to hear "A Little Bit More" in the middle of the afternoon with a table full of old guys who were drunk by four o'clock. The Bottle Rockets' 1997 ode to the bar is the happiest song on the jukebox. If wallowing... More »
The best neighborhood bars aren't necessarily the ones where everybody knows your name, but rather those where everybody asks your name. You might be a stranger when you walk in, but by the time you leave, you've got a few new friends who'll help load you out. Slo Tom's on South Broadway is legendary; the Bottle Rockets wrote a song about it, and south-siders speak of it with equal parts enthusiasm and exhaustion--people drink a lot in here. Regulars have their own glasses, which they... More »
