Slim's is a midsize, brick-walled venue that hosts a variety of underground rock, metal, hip-hop, and reggae bands - and not only is it one of the few live music clubs in a neighborhood dominated by DJ discothèques, it's also one of the best places in the city for underage music fans to catch bands on the way up. There's a full bar for clubgoers over 21, plus a rear upstairs balcony with seating and tables if you want to take a load off and get away from the throngs below.
Along with fellow Georgian metal mavericks Mastodon and Baroness, Savannah quintet Kylesa has taken a place at the vanguard of heavy music over the past decade. Anchored by the guitar/vocal tandem of Phillip Cope and Laura Pleasants, Kylesa... More »
Carletta Sue Kay is a creation of Randy Walker, a large man who puts on wigs and dresses and, backed by a rock band, sings beautiful, often lovesick songs with a skilled tenor voice. This may tempt you to make some assumptions about Carletta Sue... More »

Steve Ignorant stirred great controversy among the punk community last year when he announced that he would be performing the songs of his seminal English anarcho-punk band Crass, whose sound, ethics, and radical politics have long shaped punk itself. Even the band's breakup was noble: Upon forming in 1977, they vowed to disband completely in 1984, as a nod to the Orwellian totalitarianism that their lyrics likened to Thatcherism. Many punks felt that Ignorant's performance of Crass songs... More »
In years past, Slim's has picked up a shoddy reputation for sound. Countless shouts of "Turn up the vocals" and deafening squelches of feedback have soiled many a listener's experience. But we're happy to report that Slim's has turned that ship around. Of the many midsize halls in town, Slim's now sounds the best, whether the act onstage is playing thrash metal or delicate folk. And, aside from the noise, it's just a great place to catch a show. The open floor offers lots of unobstructed... More »
