Named after a Berber desert oasis where Alexander the Great once went to consult the famous Oracle of Amun, who declared him a god, Siwa Grill has a humble objective: to deliciously evoke the vernacular chow of Egypt. Vegetarian koshary is a wonder of tossed elbow macaroni, lentils, chickpeas, and sharp tomato sauce garnished with onions caramelized to the texture of tumbleweed. The meat assortment is also particularly impressive, ranging from the miniature, nutmeg-laced sausage called mekanik to thin, well-marbled steaks.
It's not kosher, but it sure is good--koshary, a homely Egyptian staple of macaroni, lentils, and chickpeas flooded with piquant sauce, with frizzled fried onions perched like an unruly thatch of hair on top. Find it at SIWA GRILL, named after a desert oasis where Alexander the Great went for advice. More »
