A small, no-frills restaurant - one room, paper napkins, no liquor license - Simply Thai happens to turn out fantastic Thai dishes both familiar and exotic. Curries are fantastic, especially the rich, complexly spiced massaman curry and the fiery green curry. (Be warned: The kitchen might very well deliver the latter spiced as hot as you think you want it.) Tom yum and tom kha soups are great, too, as is the less-familiar gang jued tofu, a clear broth with tofu, ground meat, cilantro and scallions. Specials include numerous seafood dishes, and do not miss the fried sweet potato appetizer.
On Sunday, April 22, the Thai Association of Greater St. Louis hosts its annual Traditional Thai New Year Festival, also known as the Songkran Festival, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Thai Buddhist ... More »
The massaman curry at Simply Thai might look drab, flecks of spice notwithstanding. Truly, though, it is anything but: The sweetness of coconut milk gives way to a melange of spices and the heat of ch... More »
A running joke among aficionados of Thai cuisine is that no matter how hard you beg, plead, wheedle, boast or threaten, the kitchen won't serve your red curry or tom yum soup as hot as the Thai themselves prefer. For the most part, you're stuck... More »
The name is both a description and a revelation. There is nothing fancy about this small north-county restaurant. Blink as you're driving Florissant's commercial drag, and you certainly will miss it. A shame, because here, in a dining room that offers paper napkins and no booze, you will find dishes more complex, more flavorful and — if you desire — hotter than at any of St. Louis' many other Thai restaurants. The menu offers more than 100 selections, but you can't go wrong with the curries: The green is pungent, and you could spend hours teasing out all the flavors in the cashew-studded massaman. Of course you will love the tangy, spicy tom yum and the tom kha soups, but consider a bowl of gang jued tofu soup with ground pork or chicken. The flavors are clear and bright. A simple dish, simply delicious.
I love this place--the family who runs it is so incredibly kind and has a tendency to memorize your preferences. I have a young son and though it's hard to get out to restaurants with him in tow now, I am never made to feel unwelcome or like a hassle here. The menu is spectacular--100 items--and there are pictures to help the not-so-experienced eater enjoy Thai food. It's also easy to chose your level of spice/hotness. My favorite dish is the Tom Yum Noodle soup with Shrimp.
