  • 2011 | Best New Ski Terrain

Nothing compares to the 22,000 acres of new ski terrain open at Silverton Mountain this season, where the lone chairlift is now supplemented with a whirlybird, thanks to a new operating agreement. Heli drops start at $159 per run (less with a $399 season pass) or $999 for a full day (six runs), making this the most affordable heli-skiing operation in the United States, and get you as high as 13,514', with vertical drops in the 3,100' range; Silverton uses proceeds from the heli-skiing to... • 2010 | Best Hikeable Terrain

Welcome to the "sidecountry": A single lift takes you part of the way to Silverton Mountain's seemingly endless powder stash, but you'll be hoofing it in guided groups to get to the goods from there. Avalanche gear is mandatory and available to rent, and you'll want to break out your big boards. Instead, make the drive to Silverton Mountain. Every run here must be guided, so a maximum of just forty skiers are permitted on the single-lift mountain per day. The area gets just over 33 feet of snow a year, so fresh powder isn't a... More »

Silverton is simply amazing. Don't go there expecting your typical ski resort (no lodge here, just a small hut at the base). And be prepared to hike! You'll get above 13,000 ft and ride some of the steepest terrain in Colorado. And definitely do the heli drop. A single drop is $159 and worth every penny. Easily one of the best experiences I've ever had on a mountain.
