Dine at the Sierra Bonita Grill and you're guaranteed to fall in love - with the Sierra Bonita Grill. Formerly the Copper Queen, it's been redesigned in a beautiful ranch-house style featuring Cherokee red flooring and brown-black wooden beams above. The food is Southwestern all the way, with many of the flavors of Oaxaca and the Yucatán. The buttermilk chicken, Azteca soup, rock shrimp cocktail, and cowboy stew are all musts. And for dessert, the Oaxacan chocolate soufflé will wow your taste buds like they've rarely been wowed.
Some snooty conquistador way back when once noted that in Mexico, avocados and guacamole were "butter for the poor." My, how times have changed! Guacamole -- a literal and linguistic mash-up of the Na... More »

We doubt many folks would drool over any menu description that mentions corn smut, because it sounds like something gnarly that Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern would seek out on his Travel Channel show. But call this fungus by its Nahuatl name, as they do in Mexico, and it has quite an appetizing ring to it: huitlacoche. This is the magic ingredient in Sierra Bonita Grill's scrumptious mini-quesadillas, with menonita cheese, spinach, and huitlacoche wrapped in fragrant corn tortillas. Pico... More »
Inspired by the pioneer ranches of the Old West -- and named after southeastern Arizona's Sierra Bonita Ranch, founded by Henry Hooker in 1872 -- charming, comfortable Sierra Bonita Grill puts a delicious gourmet spin on our state's culinary traditions. The menu is mostly creative comfort food, with Mexican accents and native Southwestern ingredients. The red chile pork tamale, a heap of melt-in-your-mouth smoked pork and salsa on top of sweet, moist masa, is an edible work of art,... More »
As with any scrumptious cocktail, the proof's in the amount of alcohol involved. Now, some places serve their mojitos weak. So weak, in fact, that they taste like lemonade with mint leaves thrown in. Not so at Sierra Bonita, the excellent Southwestern restaurant that's into its second year in Phoenix. At Sierra, the bartenders know how to mix the restaurant's specialty. So much so that -- try as we may this year -- we couldn't (during an exhaustive survey of bars in the metropolitan area) fi... More »
We're suckers for excellent Southwestern fare, especially when served in a classic Southwestern ambiance. So it may be no great surprise that our pick for the best new restaurant of the year is the Sierra Bonita Grill, formerly a bar known as the Copper Queen. After much work by Sheldon Knapp, the SB's owner and also the owner of the Phoenix City Grille, the new eatery is a gorgeous salute to the ranch-houses of old, with ceilings of dark wooden beams, Cherokee red flooring, and walls... Here's how to mix a good mojito: Take a lime and put it into the microwave for about 20 seconds. This makes it easier to extract the juice from the bugger. Squeeze into a tall mortar (a bowl will do, if you are as ill-equipped as we are). Add a tablespoon of sugar, plus four or five washed mint leaves. Muddle the holy hell out of the mess (that means mush it up real good), and pour the contents into a tall glass of ice cubes. Fill the glass to about three-quarters of an inch from the top... More »
Try the pomegranate martinis - they're awesome! The Pork Roast is amazing. The fish tacos are my favorite - I usually get them as a meal instead of an appetizer
