The third in a block-square eatery empire run by Nemo/Big Pink's owners, this beyond-sushi bar is, simply, a class act. And the sushi is equally cutting edge. Try a spicy lobster roll with avocado, salmon caviar, tender shiso leaves, and the hot/sweet counterpoint of jalapeƱo and mango; a California roll upgraded with delicately sweet, fresh Alaskan king crab; or a crisp oyster roll, featuring deep-fried battered oysters plus cucumber, masago, lettuce, chili mayo, and an unusual salty blast from capers that rendered soy-dipping unnecessary. For a change dinner at this sushi joint is a treat for nonsushi lovers, too: Grilled meats and seafood come with half a dozen tasty sauces; salads come with field greens (plus other seasonal treats like fresh hearts of palm) instead of standard Japanese-eatery iceberg. Don't miss shisito, absolutely addictive flash-fried Japanese peppers or the superb sweets, compliments of Nemo's pastry guru, Hedy Goldsmith.

What do you get when you take Browns -- a two-story building with seven-foot ceilings built in 1915 with the now-prohibited, nearly extinct first-growth Dade County pine -- lift it up four feet and move it back fifteen feet, and drop it on cinder... More »
As I watch TV, I hear the familiar commercial jingle: "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony" and see the trademark-red Coca-Cola logo before it even flashes on the screen. In my heart, I feel the swell of so much goodwill toward... More »
By definition, fine-dining chefs aren't your average day-jobbers. Their hours are mostly converse to those experienced by the rest of the vocational world. Their kitchen society is a caste, made up of which group has the right to instruct another... More »
First he opened the eclectic Nemo at Collins Avenue and First Street in South Beach. Then came the hip Big Pink diner across the street and up the block. Both were huge hits, but Myles Chefetz was just getting started. Next was Shoji Sushi, next door to Nemo, and then, just more than a dozen years ago, he hit the gastronomic grand slam with Prime One Twelve on Ocean Drive, which not only redefined the modern steak house but also has been one of the top-grossing restaurants in the nation for... While this eatery's name seems to suggest something far simpler than fine dining, things are not always what they seem. Shoji's stuff is not standard sushi but rather neo-Japanese/New World fusion food -- and very fine indeed. Instead of the standard sushi-bar faux-crab sunomono, for instance, there's snapper ceviche with sake, citrus, sweet peppers, onion, cilantro, and masago, available alone or on a sampler plate with equally imaginative ceviches of hamachi, salmon, and scallops. Three-radish salad with soy-lime vinaigrette? Crisp oyster rolls? Lobster tempura? Green tea cheesecake? And cold sake on tap to wash it all down? An establishment that treats Japanese cuisine with respectful innovation, Shoji is the latest product to debut from the Michael Schwartz-Myles Chefetz team. Like the partners' other restaurants, including Nemo, it seems Shoji was destined for success from the get-go, thanks to flavorful drinks like the sakatini (like a cosmo but with sake). Indeed...
