Sleek, sophisticated Japanese restaurant with many items unique to Japanese restaurants in Phoenix, though not to Japanese restaurants in Japan or larger American cities. The place was designed by its owner, himself a fussy Japanese eater, so you know it's good. And even if you can't tell your ponzu from your miso sauce, it's worth a trip to see how well the Japanese really eat. Topnotch sushi bar is another reason to go. Gets crowded on the weekends for dinner, so you may wish to reserve a table, especially for larger parties.

Usually, we stay fairly close to home when we're heading out for sushi. That is, until we tried Shimogamo. Now, we have no problem driving out to the southwest corner of the Asian-centric intersection of Warner and Ray in Chandler. This tiny storefront, connected to C-Fu Gourmet, won us over immediately -- from the talkative and friendly sushi chef and the ever-gracious owner and his wife (they are Japanese immigrants, unlike many owners of Valley sushi joints, who tend to be from South... Shimogamo is the kind of strip-mall haunt that you wouldn't likely stumble upon unless you happened to be visiting its more conspicuous neighbor, C-Fu Gourmet, or perhaps driving around looking for Lee Lee Oriental Market, located catty-cornered to the small establishment. No matter. If you love Japanese food, this jewel box of a restaurant is a more than worthy destination unto itself. Inside, the decor is modern and minimal, and the sushi bar is filled with Japanese regulars (always a good... More »
There are a number of great spots for traditional sushi in the Valley. But owner Yoshio Otomo's Shimogamo has the wow factor others lack. Maybe it's the energy that comes from being the new guy on the block, because, interestingly, this is Otomo's first venture into the restaurant biz. Prior to opening the upscale new eatery with its sleek black-and-gray interior, Otomo worked for a large Japanese import company, and as Japanese businessmen are wont to do, he spent a lot of time in Japanese... Best sushi ever!!!! try the tuna/avo cado salad with special dressing, it's really really good. The atmosphere is really modern and dark & the owner always greets at the door with a smile :)
