The disorienting, kaleidoscopic menu, which veers from endive salad to turnip cake to jerk chicken, is a peek inside the mind of the brilliant, Hong Kong-born chef, Susur Lee. Lee's Toronto restaurants are much beloved, but he hasn't brought the same magic to this, his first New York restaurant. Service is overbearing, and a dinner can get very pricy - you must order two or three dishes per person. Nevertheless, some of the food is sublime: A delicious homemade tofu custard is studded with shrimp, mussels, and dried scallops, shot through with green tendrils of desert moss and sitting in a bouillon made of duck, chicken, and pork stock. The turnip cake - gooey on the inside, crisped brown on the outside, and topped with a cylinder of silky steamed Asian eggplant and zipped with salty preserved black bean-is a wonderful combination of flavors and textures.
